India Company Museum
citadel of port-louis
The Historical Background to the Museum

The city of Lorient, with the agreement of the French Navy and the Paris Naval Museum, took the decision to transfer its India Company Museum to the historical setting of the Citadelle of Port-Louis - a fine example of military architecture dating from the beginning of the 17th century, which from ifs ramparts looked out at those fine sailing ships as they set off on the great India Adventure. The Museum was installed in July 1984 in a building on the citadel's military square. There it brings to life the history of that maritime era lived through by the different India Companies during the 17th and 18th centuries, as they opened up trade with Africa, India, China and the New World.
