The 20th century

After the dynamic and stormy former periods the XXth seems to shorten the activities in Port-Louis.

The First World War (1914-1918) brought its procession of dramas, deaths and the Navy hospital was full up of injured soldiers.

Once peace was back, it was the sardine that got scarce. So Port-Louis turned over to tuna-fishing, but as Lorient fishing port (Keroman) had been was developing since 1927, it became a serious threat to Port-Louis's activities. Then the Navy hospital was transferred to Lorient in 1936.
The Second World War (1939-1945) put a mark in the history with the execution of the "resistants" at the citadel and the 400 houses bombed.

The Second World War (1939-1945) left a tragic mark in the history of the city with the execution of 69 Resistance patriots in the citadel and the bombing of about 200 houses.Since 1950, the canneries have been closing one after the other while the fishing flotilla has been getting smaller and smaller, drawing in its wake a large part of the local craft activity.Nowadays, the number of active people in the population is decreasing as well as the pupils in the schools. The town strives to fill the vacancies in the port with sailing boats.

What is the XXIst century going to be like ?
