The 18th century
|In spite of the settlement of the Navy
in Port-Louis, the port installations remained very rudimentary,
compared with its neighbour's L'Orient.
From Louis XV's and Louis XIV's reigns, we only note the fishing development and the extension of the canneries (sardine presses ), the building of the great powder-magazine in 1750 and the town planning (Place des Victoires, Rue St Louis)..
However, it is during this period (in 1783 and in 1786) that a bold project took place : a liner service between Port-Louis and New-York, every third tuesday each month.
The liaison has been initiated because of the American Independence War to bring passengers, letters and packages (packet-boats).
Port-Louis at the time of the French Revolution.The Revolution began in Port-Louis in an atmosphere of unity and joy (Te Deum, bonfires, patriotic parades, cannon salvoes).
Streets and signs referring to royalty were renamed. "Trees of Freedom" were planted. The furniture from the Recollets convent was sold, the calvary and the fountain on St Pierre square were pulled down and the materials were used to build the great bridge of the citadel.
As Port-Liberté was surrounded by important chouan strongholds (Riantec, Plouhinec), the defence was reinforced in 1793, at the entrance of the town and in Kerzo. But due to its isolation, Port-Liberté suffered from famine during several years
The dismantling of the India Company in 1797 ended the XVIIIth century. The Navy could recover a well-installed dockyard in Lorient and deserted Port-Liberté.

Jean François de Surville was born in Port-Louis in 1717 and died in peru by the year 1770.
